Prominent U.S. environmentalists arrested over Keystone XL protest at White House

It could have been a little clearer, it does make sense though, triggering global warming in the same sense as shooting yourself in the foot can happen more than once if you're not really bright.

Whats interesting is that even in "big oil" Texas, many citizens are against Keystone a the state has enacted Eminent Domain laws to run the pipeline on people's private land, whether those people want it or not.

But, if it was a peaceful protest then there's a problem because it would indicate that the White House has no compunctions about abusing the tenents of free speech and the right to peaceful protest.

So which is it?

It probably depends on what you call peaceful. The protesters were undoubtably completely pacifist and resistance-less, but I suspect they were arrested for chaining themselves to the white house gate, which would be construed as a threat by security.

I thought it was for trespassing.

They were arrested for tying themselves to the White House fence. Considering you're not even supposed to stand up against the fence I imagine tying yourself to it is going to result in your immediate removal. Secret Service don't dick around.

If you are invovled in a protest, it doesn't really matter. If you fail to comply immediately with a police officers request, you'll be arrested.

No, actually. I went to a protest once (protesting any invovlment of Canada in the Second Iraq War). I saw feminists against the war. Marxist-Leninists agaist the war. Anachists against the war. All these groups more or kless using the controversey over the war as a way to further the ends of their political beliefs. That turned me off protesting.

But I've sen the police often enough crack down harshly on protestors. Most of the protestors are peaceful, but you will always get the yahoos, like the Black Bloc losers, to instigate a crackdown. You don't have to be breaking any law to be arrested. You just have to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Uhhhh yeah. So tell us Professor Environment, seeing as how the oil that is NOT currently going through the non-existent Keystone XL is instead being hauled by rail(aside from the other pipelines already in action), how would Keystone XL increase emissions in a way that rail doesn't??? In fact, it would seem that rail transport would create MORE emissions than a pipeline.

I'm not sure more oil would flow into the US through Keystone, so much as it would replace the conflict oil from Venezuela. Surprisingly they say the tar sands oil is actually cleaner than that from Venezuela. Less emissions.

One wonders if maybe the real reason Obama is blocking Keystone is perhaps he prefers the Commie oil to continue to flow.

Blocking Keystone won't stop tar sands oil. They're making arrangements to send it to China. So this protest isn't so much about stopping the flow of oil as it is deciding where it goes.

This protest was no biggie. Just twenty to thirty of the green elite. Some are the usual suspects. Actress, Darryl Hannah often turns up at these things. This is activist head of NASA/GISS, James Hansen's fourth trip to the hoosegow.
