Nothing like corporate responsibility. This company must have a contract with the city or other govt, or maybe a hotel, - time to find a new provider. Can you imagine what it would do to the city's image if the life guard had followed orders?

Liability is the key and the cause of lots of problems in the U.S. If some kid had stubbed his toe while the guard was busy with the drowning man there would be court action by the kid's parents. The really weird thing is they would win a million bucks. The scare of liability sneaks in everywhere. It's here in Canada as well, just not as bad yet. Kudos though to the other guards for taking a stand.
"We take the safety of all visitors to our beaches very seriously," Hallandale Beach City Manager Renee Crichton said in a statement. "Whether they are in a protected area or unprotected area, we believe aid must be rendered."
This guy will probably get his job back, and the city needs to have a serious talk with their lifeguard provider. Or fuck, just provide their own lifeguards the way other places do. Why do they need a middleman?

The lifeguard in question was working at a private beach where the public lifeguards do not provide service.
Were it so easy to say it was just Florida. I'm afraid it is the entire USA that's gone crazy this way. Plenty of businesses do or do not do many things due to the fear of being sued. I'd say it would be a good idea to ask the judiciary to dismiss frivolous and vexatious cases but then the vast majority of judges are lawyers.
It'd be like asking the fox to rule on making henhouses safer.
"xerxes" said No kidding. An easier thing to do would be to make things like this public services provided by the local government again.
Not anymore. Governments all over the country are laying off public workers. I've accepted a 5% cut (and was willing to take 20%) so there just isn't the money for this kind of thing.
What we really need in this case is tort reform to prevent ambulance chasing shyster attorneys from suing people for nonsense reasons.

From anothere article:

Another example of rules and regulations winning over common sense.
Common sense is illegal in most of the world these days.
