When the sun set on Monday, hours after the world learned of Jack Layton's death, thousands of people around the world -- from Toronto to Jerusalem -- kept their porch lights shining in honour of the late NDP leader.

hehe, my first thought as well. It's a nice gesture though.

Be that as it may, I'm betting that if something happened to Harper and there was a massive and spontaneous outpouring of grief, most of the righties wouldn't be acting so sickened.

If anything it shows how great a man we have lost that people are willing to do this.

Respect IS deserved. The 'pomp & cermon is over the top, as it always is for 'celebrity' of any stripe!

Oh come on. let's put things in perspective now. He was a politician, who a few months ago was being ridiculed for visiting a brothel, taking up space in a public housing complex, racking up huge bills in personal expenses on the public's dime and whose motives were being questioned as he cozied up to the separatists and their cause. Any sympathy I feel for him, is because he was a cancer victim who lost his fight...it ends there, but it's my hope that because he was a public figure, Cancer research may get extra funding/attention.

I'm sorry for his family and friends that he lost his battle with cancer, but a great Canadian? Don't think so. If the country ever had the misfortune of electing a NDP government federally the damage they would cause would take years to correct. Just like in B.C. or Ontario. Just because he could fool voters in Toronto, doesn't make him great. Next the worlds greatest heroine ELIZABETH MAY!!!

You hit the nail on the head with that comment.

    I'd rep if I could. R=UP

In the hypothetical case of Harper's death, I think it's a little different when a sitting PM dies.

Yeah, judging by the last half dozen we've had, it would be a reason to celebrate

It's actually very similar. Leader of the opposition is an important role in our government, which is why he also gets an official residence.

I think we are turning this into a bit of a Diana moment, but Layton does deserve a state funeral.
