WASHINGTON - Sarah Palin's weekend admission that her family once travelled to Canada to receive treatment under the public health-care system she's so often demonized prompted skepticism and ridicule Monday among her critics in the United States.

    Ehehehhehe. Good find.

    Betchya don't like mine though.

Turns out (as usual) that's all bullshit.

Here's Sarah's actual quote from her speech.

My first five years of life we spent in Skagway, Alaska, right there by Whitehorse (180km away. see map). Believe it or not this was in the 60s we used to hustle on over the border for health care that we would receive in Whitehorse. I remember my brother, he burned his ankle in some little kid accident thing and my parents had to put him on a train and rush him over to Whitehorse and I think, isnt that kind of ironic now. Zooming over the border, getting health care from Canada.

According to the summary of Canadas health care system by Health Canada, it was only until 1972 that Yukon create medical insurance plans with federal cost sharing.

    They paid.

She was a kid at the time. You got that, right?

Wow I sought medical care in Texas, is that a scandle or what. Don't leak it to the press now.

I am sure that plenty of Canadian and American in kind find themselves useing the other system at times.

Who the fuck cares... and they call this news. What no earthquakes today??

EDIT: sorry, there was a 2.9 earthquake in Petrolia, CA - run for the hills, it the end of the world. 8O

Palin's family hopped borders to use a social welfare system they didn't pay into. By their own party's current standards, they're no different than filthy Mexicans.

...The Yukon Territories didn't even have nationalized health care until the 70s.

So did Danny. They can't bitch when we use their health care when they use ours.

Different complaints. Proximity to care is not the same thing as superior care. And to what extent is a five year old responsible for something that happened to her brother over 30 years ago? And when did she bitch about Canadians using American Doctors? Is 5 year old Sarah now also responsible for every comment made by every American in the health care debate?

Pretty petty, if you ask me.

Not different at all. Proximity is exactly the reason Danny boy went abroad. Not wanting to wait is the other and neither is a reasonable argument against Canadian health care. Privatization will only exacerbate proximity problems and wait times might be shortened for the few who can pay larger premiums but be extended to "Can't afford it" to many others.

She isn't responsible what her family did when she was a child that's correct. She is responsible for her reprehensible and disparaging remarks about our health care system when her parents were a direct beneficiary of it.

They weren't bitching, more like stating "See! If so and so leader comes here, when he can get it free for there, there must be something wrong with their oh so touted system!"

Which remarks were those? What exactly is Sarah supposed to have said?

Eh, what? Not wanting to wait was why Danny Williams went to MIAMI instead of waiting to get his treatment (which was available in Canada, probably in Toronto though, or another major city). He has the money, and he should have every right to get the best health care available. Nobody, at least, not in the US, has an issue with people coming to the US to get health care (Actually, I'm sure they tout it as why it's the best system ever). Proximity is not why, since there was probably a closer facility in Canada, or heck, in New York state that he could have used.

Oh wait, I had to read the article...

In November, Palin told Canadian comedian Mary Walsh - in character as Marg Delahunty during an episode of "This Hour Has 22 Minutes" - that Canada should dismantle its public health-care system and let private enterprise take over.

Is that the one? Is that the "reprehensible, disparaging remark" you're talking about? I saw that one. This comedienne dressed in a goofy Newfie outfit follows Palin onto the bus and shouts questions to her as she boards. Palin goofs an answer back at her.

Honestly...this just get sillier and sillier. Faux lefty outrage is silly.

Same thing. They were spouting partisan hack comments about Canadian health care without any true understanding of what it is designed to do. Canadians go south to get quicker treatment and Americans go north (or south to Mexico) simply to be able to afford to get care.
