OTTAWA -- Canada's six NHL teams are scrambling to find alternative travel arrangements south of the border after the U.S. Department of Transportation banned Air Canada's charter fleet from flying between U.S. cities.

Great! Move the teams back to the Great Lakes, Ontario-to-the-Maritimes, and Northeastern United States... bus trips for all and no more failing Yankee teams in the desert!

The matter was pushed by the U.S. Air Line Pilots Association. It had demanded an investigation of passenger lists on the NHL flights, which found a few examples of injured players, personal trainers and team owners boarding the charter south of the border and departing at another U.S. city in a technical violation of the agreement.

Were the teams greedy and flying passengers they weren't allowed to? If that's the case no wonder the exemption from the normal cabotage prohibition was revoked.

I think Baird is approaching this the wrong way (i.e. banning American flights). People spend money at games, let them continue to come. As for us going down for any games - we'll have to "pencil them in" pending travel arrangements. How many games do you think would have to be cancelled before they changed their minds? 1.

I do agree with Ieewgrant though - there are rules, and if these guys are taking liberties - something needs to be fixed.

I hope we don't knee-jerk this and ban their flights in...

What is the US ALPA attempting to accomplish (outside of making themselves look like jerks)?

It's just more of that bullshit protectionism.
I say Canada should respond in kind. After all, there's a LOT more US teams that have to come to Canada to play.

This kind of bullshit protectionism can kill us all on both sides of the border.
The good thing with a forum like this is we get to know whats going on so we can
    at least resist this horseshit.

Canada doesn't allow foreign airlines to fly between Canadian cities, so why should the USA allow it? It's no more protectionist than what's gone on in the Canadian airline industry forever.

Wait, so if say San Jose play in Edmonton one night and 2 nights later their next game is in Vancouver, they'd have to take a Canadian flight and not their charter??

Fly a charter into the empire state building. Preferably the Maple Leafs. Then say it was an inside job adn blame Obama.
